Pre Check? Global Entry? Clear ID?

Lets Talk about TSA Pre Check, Global Entry and Clear

Lots of people have asked me which one they should get. The answer to that depends completely on your travel needs and patterns. In the following paragraphs I will describe to you what they each one is, its benefits and its cost so you can decide which one you want!

We will start with TSA Pre Check, TSA Pre Check is a product designed to help you streamline through the security line before your flight. If you have Pre Check you are able to enter a special security line that is typically 80% shorter than the standard security line and will allow you to not remove your shoes, not remove your electronics from their carriers. I had TSA Precheck for several years and got through security in about 15 minutes or less almost 100% of the time. It was definitely worth having.

TSA Pre Check is designed for travel within the United States and is currently available at a cost of $77.95. The enrollment process is simple, you fill out an online form and then at your convenience report to a TSA facility to be fingerprinted photographed and interviewed. The process takes about 15 minutes. The TSA Pre Check is good for a period of 5 years.  You will be issued a Trusted Traveler Number and will enter it on all air reservations moving forward.  This cost will be completely reimbursed by your Capital One Venture X card so there is no reason not to get it!

Global Entry, On my vary first trip outside the country, I learned that my TSA Pre Check was of no use on International Flight and did nothing to assist me with clearing customs on my return trip. Global Entry clearance is issued by the State Department just like your international passport. You will apply, interview and receive your decision through the passport agencies. There is no better way to say this than Global Entry includes everything you get with TSA PreCheck. If you intend to travel outside the United States, Global Entry is the way to go. On my last several trips to Europe, I have entered the Customs area at the Dublin Airport and observed 150-200 people in line waiting to get through customs. I enter the Global Entry line and do not have to wait at all. I approach a kiosk; it identifies me and I move forward to an agent that waves me through! Its incredible for anyone who doesn’t like to wait in line. If you are a line person…..don’t get Global Entry.

The process to get Global Entry is almost identical. You will fill out an online form, wait for conditional approval and attend a brief interview if they request it. If you get Global Entry, there is no reason to have TSA PreCheck

Global Entry is good for 5 years, its cost is $100 and is completely covered by the Capital One Venture X so there is no reason not to get it!

Finally, Clear ID……Clear Id is a supplemental program designed to assist business travelers or extremely frequent flyers get through the security line even faster that the TSA Pre Check alone. If you are a Clear ID member, a Clear ID representative will meet you at the identification kiosk and personally escort you to the front of the Precheck line. If you are a combination Clear ID Precheck member you will go through very quickly. If you are just a Clear ID member, you will be escorted to the front of the Precheck line and still be required to remove shoes belts light jackets and electronics.

I am a frequent traveler and have not yet found a need for a Clear ID membership but it is a personal choice. The cost a Clear ID membership is $189 a year and an additional $99 per family member you wish to add.

American Express Platinum will cover the cost of a Clear membership.
